1cupWarm water or warm milkMust be warm, not hot.
1/2cupMolassesRegular molasses, not blackstrap.
2teaspoonsYeastActive dry or instant yeast.
4cupsAll purpose flourBread flour can be used for a chewier texture.

1teaspoonSaltDo not skip for flavor.
1largeEggOptional for added softness.
Instructions
Preparation
Soften the oats by pouring warm water or milk over them and letting them sit for about 10 minutes.
Stir in the molasses and add the yeast. If using active dry yeast, let it get foamy. For instant yeast, mix it with the flour.
Mix in melted butter, salt, and the egg (if using). Gradually add flour until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough by hand or with a mixer until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise until doubled in size, about 60 to 90 minutes.
Shaping and Baking
Punch down the dough, divide it into 12 to 15 equal pieces, and shape each piece into a ball.
Place the shaped rolls in a buttered baking dish and cover them to let puff up for 30 to 45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 18 to 24 minutes until golden and sounding hollow when tapped.
Brush with melted butter immediately after removing from the oven.
Notes
Measure flour lightly to avoid dense rolls. Don't rush the second rise for a fluffy texture. You can shape the rolls and refrigerate overnight for convenience. Store leftovers in a sealed container for 2-3 days and reheat before serving.
