Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb Smoked sausage Any kind you like (beef, turkey, pork, chicken).
  • 1 cup Long grain white rice Jasmine also works great. Brown rice needs more liquid and time.
  • 1/4 cup Honey Can substitute with maple syrup.
  • 4 cloves Garlic, minced Fresh garlic is recommended.
  • 1/4 cup Soy sauce Low sodium is fine.
  • 1 cup Broth (chicken or vegetable) Water can be used, but broth tastes better.
  • 1 tbsp Vinegar or lemon juice For balancing sweetness.

Optional Additions

  • Vegetables (e.g., peas, bell peppers, spinach) Can be added directly into the skillet.
  • 2 tbsp Green onions or sesame seeds For garnish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the smoked sausage into coins.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a small amount of oil.
  • Add the sausage and cook until golden brown on both sides.

Building the Sauce

  • Push the sausage to the sides and add minced garlic in the center.
  • Stir the garlic for about 20 seconds to prevent burning.
  • Add honey, soy sauce, and a splash of vinegar or lemon juice, stirring until bubbly.

Cooking the Rice

  • Stir in the uncooked rice until it is well coated in the sauce.
  • Pour in the broth, stir once, and bring to a gentle simmer.
  • Cover with a lid, reduce heat to low, and cook for 15 to 18 minutes until the rice is tender.

Finishing Touches

  • Let it sit covered for 5 minutes after turning off the heat.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork and taste. Adjust seasoning with soy sauce for salt or honey for sweetness as desired.
  • Garnish with green onions or sesame seeds if available.
