Ingredients

For the fish

  • 4 pieces Fish fillets (catfish or other firm white fish) Use fresh or thawed fish for best results.
  • 1 cup Buttermilk Can substitute with whole milk mixed with vinegar.
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour No substitutions needed; gluten-free flour can be used.
  • 2 tablespoons Nashville hot chicken seasoning mix Adjust according to your heat preference.
  • Salt and pepper Enhances the overall flavor.
  • Oil for frying Choose a high-smoke point oil like vegetable or canola.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Marinate the fish fillets in buttermilk for at least 1 hour.
  • In a shallow dish, mix the flour with Nashville hot chicken seasoning, salt, and pepper.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat.
  • Remove the fish from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the seasoned flour, coating well.
  • Fry the fish for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through.

Serving

  • Drain on paper towels and serve hot.

Notes

Always ensure your oil is hot enough before adding the fish to prevent sogginess. Adjust the amount of hot chicken seasoning based on your spice tolerance. Let the fried fish rest on paper towels to absorb excess oil and maintain its crispiness. Try marinating the fish overnight for even more flavor. Use a thermometer to check the oil temperature; around 350°F is ideal for frying.
