Homemade Spiced Apple Rings

Cozy, nostalgic, and naturally beautiful, these spiced apple rings are simmered in a cinnamon-clove syrup and preserved without dyes or corn syrup. They're perfect for gifting, snacking, or elevating breakfast and dinner alike.

Ingredients

  • 4 firm apples (Honeycrisp or Fuji recommended), peeled and cored
  • 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 slices fresh ginger (optional)
  • Optional: beet juice or hibiscus tea for natural coloring

Instructions

  • Peel, core, and slice apples into ¼-inch rings. Blanch in boiling water for 30 seconds, then shock in ice water. Set aside.
  • In a heavy pot, combine sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and ginger. Optional: Add hibiscus or beet for color. Bring to a simmer and stir until sugar dissolves.
  • Add apple slices to the syrup and simmer for 5 minutes, flipping once, until translucent and fragrant. Do not overcook.
  • Transfer apple rings to sterilized jars. Fill with syrup, leaving ½ inch headspace. Wipe rims, seal, and process in boiling water for 10 minutes. Cool and check seals.
  • Store sealed jars in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months. Refrigerate after opening and use within 2 weeks. Serve with breakfast, meats, or baked into pastries.

Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji for best texture. Optional: Add beet juice or hibiscus tea to naturally tint syrup. To store, follow USDA safe canning guidelines and process jars in boiling water for 10 minutes. Keeps for up to 6 months unopened.
