Ingredients
2hamburger patties (seasoned with salt & pepper)
4slicesbread (rye, sourdough, or Texas toast)
4slicescheese (Swiss, American, or provolone)
1cupcaramelized onions
2tbspbutter or mayo
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Optional add-ins: bacon, jalapeños, chipotle mayo
Instructions
Form and season the hamburger patties with salt and pepper. Cook in a hot skillet 3–4 minutes per side until browned and juicy. Set aside and pat dry.
Spread butter or mayo on the outside of each bread slice. Place 2 slices butter-side down on a preheated skillet.
Add a slice of cheese on each, followed by the cooked patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with the remaining bread.
Cook on medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently and covering briefly to help melt cheese. Flip carefully and cook until golden and crisp.
Rest for 1 minute, slice, and serve with fries, tomato soup, or a crisp salad.
Notes
Toast the bread lightly before assembling to avoid sogginess, and place cheese under and over the patty for the perfect melt barrier. Customize with bacon, jalapeños, or different cheeses like provolone or pepper jack.
